Catena Zapata 2021 Argentino Malbec

Subdued, plum-cherry compote with a touch of spice & herbs. Palate is a symphony. Plums, depth, earth, minerals. Note of black licorice. Acidity is there. Pleasant tannic pull on the finish. Absolutely delicious wine. And the label art is killer, too! Great gift wine.

 

Woodward Canyon 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series
Washington State // Reg $68.99 | Mixed Case $55.19

76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, 1% Syrah, 1% Barbera, 1% Dolcetto. Aged in oak barrels for 22 months. "Inviting nose of black fruits, crème brulée, and tart cherry that integrate seamlessly with the subtle, attractive oak. In the mouth, the wine is rich and elegant, showing a nice balance of ripe fruit, black currants, and light green herbs. ... Pair with a ribeye steak, Wagyu hamburger, leg of lamb, Portobello mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses." –winery notes. Drink now to 2030.

Blend of Spicy, deep, plummy notes - red & black. Dark, rich earth. Tiny note of licorice. Super complex, but easy to like. Medium-bodied. Blackberries, blueberries, black plums, earth. Finish is long, thoughtful, and delicious with fine tannins. Needs 2+ hours to open up. You will be rewarded. This is a dream for a steak or roast dinner. Drink now to 10 years. Tasted 10/26/23.

 

Virna 2016 Noi Barolo

100% Nebbiolo. Nose is soft and beautiful and complex and a little hard to pull apart: rose petals, thyme, red cherries & a touch of blackberries. Black cherries dominant on the palate. Faint orange rind acidity creates a fresh finish combining with soft tannins. Enjoyed with chanterelles on spaghetti. Perfect. Tasted 11/7/23.

 

Sordo 2018 Barolo Ravera
Piedmont, Italy // Reg $61.99 | Mixed Case $49.59

100% fancy Nebbiolo from the commune of Barolo. More modern in style, meaning a little more accessible: more fruit, smoky notes from the oak. Lots of red cherries. A little cassis. Pretty smooth. Some earthy notes. A touch of spice. Very fine tannins on the finish. Open 2+ hours.... ready to drink. Absolutely fantastic. Tasted 10/20/23.

 

Le Plan des Moines 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Rouge

Wild strawberries, raspberries, garrigue, pebbles. Everything! The nose is amazing. Fuller-bodied but not big. This wine is a symphony. Best in class. Complex yet friendly flavors of black raspberries, strawberries, red & black cherries. Elegant, spicy finish. Ready to drink. Most approachable Châteauneuf du Pape currently on our shelf! Tasted 4/4/23.

 

Le Vieux Donjon 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Beautiful nose of red berries, raspberries, cherries. You can almost smell the rocks in the vineyard (classic from this area). Blackberries, black cherries, black raspberries. A little fuller-bodied. Still a little young. Fine tannins that will smooth out in the next 5 years. Spicy, long finish. Tasted 6/15/23

 

Le Seuil de Mazeyres 2014 Pomerol

Smooth nose of dark plums & soft earth. Elegant, harmonious. Complex flavors of plums, black cherries, blackberries. Fine tannins. Ready to drink. Tasted 3/24/23.

 

Josephine de Boyd 2011 Margaux
Bordeaux, France // Reg $63.99 | Mixed Case $51.19

Plums, blackberries, cassis, violet, herbs, black tea on the nose. On the palate... add in the soil, gravel. This is a big Bordeaux. Fruit, acidity, tannins. Huge, long finish. This wine is not a nothing-burger. Plenty of fruit and body left on this 2011 vintage. Great now. We think it would still be delicious in 10 years. Tasted 4/13/23.

 

Serre dei Roveri 2015 Barolo Riserva
Piedmont, Italy // Reg $51.99 | Mixed Case $41.59

After 3 hours open... Nose of red plums, red fruit, note of licorice, earth, truffle, spice & orange rind. Similar flavors: spicy plums, cherries & a hint of orange from the acidity. Long, smooth finish with a touch of anise. Absolutely wonderful wine. Tasted 3/1/23.

 

Masi 2016 Costasera Amarone Classico
Veneto, Italy // Reg $74.99 | Mixed Case $59.99

Deep, dark, earthy plum. Dried plums as it opens up. Flavors of plums (red & black), blackberries, pflaumenmousse (German apple butter but made with plums). Wonderful acidity. Fine tannins. Absolutely delicious wine. Tasted 2/14/23.

 

Chateau de Pibarnon 2019 Bandol Rouge
Provence, France // Reg $89.99 | Mixed Case $71.99

Mourvèdre. Spicy, herbal, leather -- Old World nose in the most wonderful way. Soft, suble, beautiful. Flavors red plums, black rapsberries. Super complex. Spicy. Fantastic acidily. Medium-bodied, so not heavy. And then the finish is going.... Such a wonderful wine. Worth every penny. Tasted 11/22/22.

 

Franchetto 2014 Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG
Veneto, Italy // Reg $74.99 | Mixed Case $59.99

Rich, deep dark wine. High alcohol = 16%. Intoxicating nose. Dark berries, brandied cherries, licorice, black pepper, tobacco, spices. Intense. Full-bodied. Dinner needs to hold up: game, lamb, duck. Tasted 12/31/22.

 

P. & L. Borgeot 2020 Puligny-Montrachet
Burgundy, France // Reg $109.99 | Mixed Case $87.99

Soil on the nose (limestone & marl), then subtle tree fruit (apple/pear). Beautiful hint of lime on the nose. Complex flavors or pear, apple, limestone, clay. Note of oak, but you can taste the complexity of this wine from the roots. Limestone through the finish. Really pleasant wine.

Brothers Laurent and Pascal Borgeot (pictured above) are the 4th generation to run this 23 hectare estate which was founded in 1903 and is sustainably farmed.

Raspberries, cherry compote on the nose. Flavors of dark cherries, raspberries, orange rind with a faint note of nutmeg & earth. Lovely acidity. Finish just gets longer....

Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona 2018 Brunello di Montalcino

Red berries, leather, spice. Then balsamic. Flavors of red berries, raspberries, licorice. Long finish. Great acidity. Jens: A wine for the ages. Tasted on 2/14/22 after 2 hours open. Absolutely delicious. Could also age for years.

Domaine Jomain 2021 Puligny-Montrachet

Fine pear, quince, yellow fleshy plums on the soft, sophisticated nose. Aged on the lees = rich mouthfeel. Creamy lemon AND chalky minerality on the palate... how can that be?! Wonderful, tingly acidity. Crazy long finish. Absolutely stellar wine. Jens: "If I were rich, this would be my house white."

 

Bodegas Lan 2019 Edicion Limitada
Rioja, Spain // Reg $56.99 | Mixed Case $45.59

Big, huge, fancy bottle! 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from a selection of 35-40 year old vines in the El Rincón parcel. Aged for eight months in new French oak. Bottled unfiltered and unclarified.

Tasted December 2021: When you pop the cork — leather saddle! As it opens, crazy combo of fresh (old vine grapes) & aok barrels. Nose gets better & better. More herbal. More spicy. Lots of cherry fruit. Note of balsamic. Great wine. So good. Could easily age 5-6 years to be at its height.

 

Muga 2018 Reserva Selección Especial

70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo (Carignan) & Graciano (Cagnulari).

Tasted December 2021: Ripe red berries. Spicy raspberries, black fruit in the background with smoky, peppery notes. Flavors of raspberry, cherries. Fresh with good acidity & fine tannins. Well-integrated oak. Enjoy with a beautiful cut of meat, simply prepared. Avoid spicy dishes.
